Gwendoline are an antihero duo of the Rennes indie scene. Sensitive losers and thoroughly jaded citizens of the start-up nation, Micka and Pierre shape their own style, a dark “shlag wave” in a hard-hitting, poetic spoken-sung delivery, with bar-counter conversations as their primary source of inspiration, watching those around them. Between fatalistic lyrics, self-mockery, sarcasm and bitterness at the world’s mediocrity, their sincere cold wave is the symbol of a disenchanted youth and the perfect soundtrack for a protest.
In 2017, they recorded a first album, shutting themselves away for two weeks to compose everything in one go, feeding off their daily surroundings in Rennes, countless nights spent at the bar and the anxieties of our era. First self-released on Bandcamp, this album “Après c’est Gobelet !” was pressed quietly on vinyl in June 2020 on an underground Spanish label, whose stock ran out before the end of the year and which is now impossible to find in France.
At the end of 2020, the Trans Musicales also opened its doors to Gwendoline, a personal favourite of Jean-Louis Brossard, for a live show at the Ubu filmed by FIP & Culturebox, with Maëlan and Romain, their stage partners.
Having written it with no pretension or ambition, the duo are surprised by the interest in the project, between their booking at the Transmusicales and the press response, including major international media (KEXP, France TV, Les Inrocks, Post Punk Magazine…).
A video came out in April 2021 to illustrate the intoxicating, catchy “Chevalier Ricard”, ahead of a new remastered edition of the album planned for autumn.
