For his first EP, released in June 2018, Miel de Montagne simply appeared on the French music scene: over electronic productions tinged with pop, he sings about the simple life he leads in the countryside with his parents.
With him, every moment of life can turn into a song. The sadness of watching his childhood dog grow old becomes a slow number sung with a smile (“Slow Pour Mon Chien”). A craving for freedom morphs into a summer hit, naturist option (“Pourquoi Pas”). A sincere admission that he doesn’t always understand the meaning of life becomes a disarmingly honest feature with his mum (“Tu n’y Connais Rien”). And the joy of passing your driving test when you live in the countryside becomes an anthem for everyone chasing that precious licence (“Permis B Bébé”, the first single from his album).
Somewhere between an endearing young man and a live wire full of good ideas, he sits at the crossroads of the serious pop of Flavien Berger or Muddy Monk and the musical eccentricities of Jacques or Salut C’est Cool, whom he rubs shoulders with on his label Pain Surprises.
For his first album, Miel de Montagne digs further into a pressure-free reading of his life: that of a 24-year-old sometimes lost, with the hope of a ray of sunshine in his voice. Universal emotions sung in disarmingly sincere lyrics.
The result isn’t simple music, but honest music. And that’s the hardest thing to express for this new generation.
